After several months on medication (6MP) to suppress his immune system, Peter spent the last several weeks getting weaned off his medication. This was a trial to see if his immune system has learned to self-regulate over the last 6 months, or if he still needs to be on the 6MP. We finished weaning him last week and he went in for his first medication-free blood test yesterday and his counts were ... totally normal. We are still celebrating.
Going forward, this means Peter is officially in remission. Thus, in the future he won't be on any medication unless his symptoms return. We may need to get blood tests every so often, but otherwise he is just plain well - which is the main thing that we want, for Peter to be well.
In addition to having strong platelet and red blood cell counts, Peter also continues to have no detectable level of anti-red blood cell antibodies (i.e. he continues to fail the antibody test as normal people do). While it is expected that Evans patients will have good counts when they are remission, it is apparently not normal for their antibody counts to return to normal. This led our doctor to tell us "I don't know. Maybe God has healed Peter."
We think there is no maybe about it.
Praising God with you! Thanks for posting this amazing testimony and adorable adorable picture of Peter!
